Second Helping
What is it and how does it work?
By: Jackie Sherman
Many of you have heard about the “Second Helping program that was started a year ago at the United Methodist Church in Manchester. I asked Pastor Lorraine if I could share with you all what has happened in our first year.
Second Helping was the brainstorm of Pastor Jill Mack and Youth Leader, Andy McCurdy-Savago. They knew two things: there were people needing to be fed “nutritionally, socially and spiritually” and there was food out there being wasted (leftovers). An eight member committee was formed and the rest is history!
A year later, Second Helpings is now serving between 100 – 150 people each Monday night; more than 6500 served this last year for approx. $3900. Food comes from weddings, funerals, catered meals and the food bank. In addition, we have received donations of meat, fresh produce, baked goods, and monetary gifts from individuals and organizations.
A worship service has been added following dinner – called “Dessert”. Pastor Jill leads the service and shares a short message. An average of 20-30 people stay for the service.
The volunteers to assist with the meals have been unbelievable: Colesburg, Edgewood, Ryan, Manchester and other area churches, as well as, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Confirmation Classes, Choirs, Family units, 4-H Clubs, Pork Producers, individuals, and the list goes on. Doors open at 4:30; we serve at 5:30. If you have not had a chance to join us, please come some Monday evening - and bring along someone with you!
Oh yes! The food is great! If you or your organization would like more information, please feel free to contact the Manchester United Methodist Church, Pastor Jill Mack or myself. Thank you for allowing me to share with you this wonderful outreach opportunity that I have been blessed to be a part of.
